Rafters tackling Grade 5 Nile rapids, Uganda

Nile White-Water Rafting

Grade 5 rapids on the Nile: one of Africa's great adventures.

4–5 hours from Ntungamo Full day June–August · Jinja

About this destination

Jinja is known as the source of the Nile, and the stretch of river below the Bujagali area has long ranked among the world's premier white-water destinations. Commercial rafting here runs Grade 5 rapids, the highest grade commonly offered on guided public trips, through a series of named drops that mix big volume, steep waves and recovery pools. Professional outfitters supply safety kayakers, quality rafts and thorough briefings before any boat enters the current.

From Africa Coffee Park in Ntungamo, Jinja is roughly four to five hours by road, so most visitors treat rafting as a full-day excursion or as part of a longer loop that includes Kampala or the eastern circuit. Half-day and full-day packages are available; full-day trips typically include riverside lunch and time to swim in calmer sections between rapids.

Many visitors add a rafting day either side of an estate stay, using Mutumo Island Resort or Kampala hotels as bases. June through August often brings dependable water levels and cooler highland mornings before the drive east.

What to bring is simple: swimsuit, secure footwear that can get wet, sunscreen and a full change of clothes for the return journey. Operators provide helmets, life jackets and paddles. Non-swimmers should disclose this at booking; guides assign seating and support accordingly.

Rafting pairs well with Lake Bunyonyi for a highlands-and-adventure itinerary, or with Queen Elizabeth National Park if you are building a two-week southwestern Uganda loop that starts at the coffee estate.
