Kisiizi Falls waterfall in forested gorge, Uganda

Kisiizi Falls

A dramatic 30-metre waterfall in a forested gorge.

1.5 hours from Ntungamo Half day Year-round · wet season for fullest flow

About this destination

Kisiizi Falls is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in the Kigezi–Ankole transition zone. The River Rushoma drops approximately 30 metres into a steep, forested gorge near the community of Kisiizi in Rukungiri District. The sound of water and cool mist define the experience even before you reach the main viewpoint, especially during wetter months when flow is strongest.

The falls share their name with Kisiizi Hospital, a longstanding mission hospital whose heritage and community programmes are intertwined with the site. Visitor centres and local guides offer context on both natural history and the hospital's role in regional healthcare. Craft sellers and community projects near the trail add an ethical tourism dimension to a half-day visit.

Guided walks lead to viewpoints above and beside the cascade. The trail is moderate, suitable for most fitness levels with sensible footwear, and passes through rainforest fringe where you may notice hornbills, sunbirds and the dense green typical of southwestern Uganda's higher rainfall belts.

From Ntungamo, allow about ninety minutes' drive each way plus two hours on site. Kisiizi pairs naturally with Lake Bunyonyi for an overnight highlands itinerary, or with Igongo Cultural Centre and Kitagata Hot Springs if you are looping west from the estate.

Photography is best in morning light when mist hangs in the gorge; carry a rain jacket or bag for camera gear near the spray zone.
