About this destination

Lake Nyabihoko is a scenic crater lake in Ntungamo District, set among farmland and forested ridges in the Ankole highlands east of Ntungamo town. Unlike the deeper rift lakes farther southwest, Nyabihoko feels intimate, a working landscape where fishermen, farmers and hospitality operators share the shoreline. It is a defining feature of the local geography and one of the highlights of the Ntungamo highlands.

The lakeshore offers quiet walks, birdwatching and boat trips with local guides, with a memorable highland backdrop in every direction. Kingfishers, herons and wetland species are common at dawn and dusk.

Mutumo Island sits on the lake and hosts Mutumo Island Resort, glamping pods and dining that make Nyabihoko the preferred overnight base for estate visitors. Africa Coffee Park estate viewpoints also look toward the lake, linking your estate tour to the water in a single afternoon.

Sunrise and sunset are the best times for photography and canoe outings, when hills throw long shadows across the water and village smoke rises from cooking fires. Weekends book up faster; mid-week visits are calmer for fishing and relaxation.

Short drives connect Nyabihoko to Karegyeya Rock and the main estate gate, so most coffee tourists encounter the lake even if they do not stay overnight.
