Kitagata Hot Springs
Natural geothermal mineral springs in the heart of Ankole.
About this destination
Kitagata Hot Springs lies in Sheema District, approximately 62 kilometres west of Mbarara and roughly 45 minutes' drive from Ntungamo town, close enough for a relaxed half-day outing from Africa Coffee Park. The site is famous for two main springs: Ekyomugabe, often called the King's Spring, and Mulago, each with its own pool character and local following. The Runyankole name Kitagata means "warm water," which accurately describes waters that can reach temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius at the source.
Entry to the springs is free, making Kitagata one of the most accessible wellness stops in the Ankole region. The springs sit about two kilometres from Kitagata town; local guides and signposting help first-time visitors find the bathing and viewing areas. Separate pools allow soaking at comfortable temperatures downstream of the hottest vents.
For generations, residents have visited Kitagata for relaxation and traditional belief in the waters' restorative qualities. Today you will share the pools with locals and travellers alike, a social, unhurried atmosphere quite different from a spa hotel. Arrive early on weekends for quieter pools and easier parking.
The springs are a favourite recovery stop after a long estate walk. Combine with Kisiizi Falls or Karegyeya Rock for a full day of highland scenery, or pair with Igongo Cultural Centre near Mbarara for culture and lunch on the return leg.
Bring a towel, sandals and drinking water; facilities are basic compared to resort spas but authentic to rural western Uganda. Respect local customs around modesty and shared bathing areas.
